Textiles
Year 7 Textiles is combined with Food Technology
As of September 2013, pupils explore a variety of decorative techniques including dyeing using naturally produced dyes, vegetable printing & a Batik-style flour/water paste resist. Pupils use these methods to decorate & make an insulated bag from unbleached calico for carrying the cooked food items produced in Food Technology. Pupils investigate different types of fabrics with the aid of a USB microscope to show the fibre construction. Pupils then design and make a card swing ticket with fabric care instructions, price and appropriate text/images.
Year 8 Textiles is combined with Graphics/Soft Circuit Electronics
In Year 8, pupils work in teams of four during this project, promoting a group ethos and brand image. For the Graphics part of this project, pupils are introduced to the concept of designing for a specific target market. Homework is used to find out what legislation and information is needed to fulfil safety requirements when making products for children and how to use symbols to communicate this information. This knowledge is then consolidated with the production of ‘header’ card packaging ensuring a cohesive brand image for each team. Pupils use Photoshop to caricature a photo of themself to create a ‘Superhero’ version of their own face. The results are printed onto fabric, using appliqué techniques this is sewn to their puppet. The use of soft circuit technology enables the puppet to have LED ‘eyes’ which light up when the puppets hands are joined together. All products are then heated sealed in plastic with the header card attached.
Year 9 Textiles is combined with Resistant Materials
In Year 9 pupils cover a range of skills to give them the opportunity for design only briefs, exploring a variety of practical skills and working individually or as part of a small team. There will also be a first-come, first-served visit focusing on Textiles/Fashion. Pupils in Year 9 build on their sewing machine skills learnt in previous years. As from September 2013, they design and make an I-Pad/tablet bag in denim. The front flap is decorated with graffiti style appliqué &/or fabric pen. Pupils can also learn machine quilting to provide additional protection for the contents. Pupils design an Art Deco inspired door hanger to be made from 3mm coloured acrylic. CAD/CAM is introduced with the use of 2D Design software to initiate the laser cutter and their design is then produced using this technology. Pupils are then able to see the progression of the same techniques resulting in a 3D mould which is used for pewter casting.
